JCU Ambassador Agnes Chan visits disaster site in Miyagi Prefecture

[OSHIKA PENINSULA, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, 13 April 2011]

Agnes Chan, a Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) Ambassador, is visiting the disaster area in Miyagi Prefecture from 12 April to 15 April. UNICEF Headquarters responded to the current disaster in the Tohoku region with a quick decision extend assistance to Japan, marking the first assistance to Japan in approximately 50 years. In doing so, Japanese experts were dispatched from stations around the world to Japan and have been conducting emergency relief activities together with JCU.

Ms. Chan traveled to Ishinomaki City on 12 April where she visited Kama Primary School, Minato Junior High School and other shelters. Working towards reopening schools in the region, she met with the disaster victims, listened to the stories of numerous children, talked with their teachers and actively surveyed requests for assistance that will be necessary in the future.

The following day, 13 April, Ms. Chan toured the Oshika Peninsula, an area where electricity and water have yet to be restored and that is still deprived of adequate assistance. Here she discussed with teachers and staff active on-site about issues that need to be addressed in the future, such as the region’s worsening hygienic conditions.

Ambassador Chan visited the disaster sites at Kesennuma and Minamisanriku on 14 April. On 15 April she plans to visit Yamamoto Town.
