On Monday, 13 June, Makoto Hasebe, a soccer player in the Fusball-Bundesliga, visited UNICEF House in Tokyo. Mr. Hasebe donated all royalties earned from his recent book “Kokoro o totonoeru: Shori o taguriyoseru tame no 56 no shukan” (Train Your Spirit: 56 Practices to Becoming a Winner) accumulated since its release in March until the end of May, along with 50 million yen raised from a charity event held the previous day in Fujieda City, Shizuoka Prefecture to the assistance activities of the JCU being conducted in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake.
A ceremony was held where Mr. Hasebe presented the funds to JCU. There was a substantial press turnout at the ceremony, where Mr. Hasebe explained, “I am donating the profits of my recent book and proceeds from yesterday’s charity event in Fujieda City to UNICEF in order to assistance response to the Great East Japan Earthquake.” Mr. Hasebe also announced that he would continue to donate royalties earned on his new book, which has been a best seller since its release in March.
On 28 May, Mr. Hasebe visited the disaster area in north eastern Japan with other Japanese soccer players active in Europe. Mr. Hasebe expressed his resolve to continue extending assistance to victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, saying, “Taking into consideration the sheer scale of this disaster, I plan to continue providing assistance by thinking of things that I can do myself. It is important not to let our memories of this disaster fade.”
