Ms. Hatsue Kondo, a nurse from Minamisanriku Town, told us, “When we restarted health checkups people had lost weight—well, the truth is we didn’t even have a scale to measure people, so I don’t know for sure. There were also many children that had been unable to bathe, and some had developed red rashes all over their bodies.” The Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) has provided assistance that led to the restart of regular checkups for infants and children in Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecutre. These activities have now been going on for nearly a month, and Ms. Kondo says that little by little the situation is improving. “We don’t see any more rashes,” she said.

Minamisanriku Town was one of the most damaged areas in the Great East Japan Earthquake, with nearly all of its central urban area completely destroyed. As there is a tremendously limited amount of elevated area available for the construction of temporary housing, many people are still forced to live in shelters outside of the town. The restart of regular health checkups has served to keep those people in contact with their town.
Ms. Kondo commented, “There are even people staying in shelters in Tome City that bring their children all the way here. These regular checkups are by no means simply a place people come to measure their weight. People come hoping to exchange information with their friends and to meet others from the community.”

The regular health checkups are now being carried out in a small corner of Shizugawa Primary School, but this space will be unavailable from the end of this month. JCU is preparing assistance to secure a new location that can also be used for the Asahi Preschool, which is also offering emergency daycare activities in a borrowed classroom at Shizugawa Primary School.
On this day more than 10 children between eight and twelve months old received health checkups. The children that came for checkups were presented with picture books donated to the UNICEF Children’s Mini Library project (right).
