On 8 September, letters from children in Morocco were delivered to Yoshida Preschool in Watari Town, Miyagi Prefecture. For this occasion, the letters were delivered by El Moutaouakil Amine, a native of Casablanca, Morocco that is currently studying at a graduate school in Japan. Mr. Amine has been active as a multilingual volunteer since the 11 March disaster. The children at Yoshida Preschool were immediately overcome with excitement when he entered the classroom wearing traditional Moroccan dress.
After staff from the Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) provided an explanation about the Tegami Project, a special lecture was held about Morocco. The children stared with their mouths wide open in surprise when Mr. Amine stood before everyone and greeted the class in Arabic. One child yelled out, “I have no idea what you just said!” Mr. Amine smiled and began to show pictures to the children as he explained about his home country of Morocco in perfectly fluent Japanese. The class let out cheers of excitement at the photos of beautiful buildings and the desert that appeared on the screen. Everyone believed that Morocco was a hot, desert-like country and were very surprised to learn that it actually snows and that there are even snow-capped mountains. The children also loved seeing photos of the camels, which are only rarely found in zoos in Japan.

After practicing greetings in Arabic, the children were given the letters and pictures drawn by children in Morocco. Most of the pictures that Mr. Amine pulled from the box had the Japanese and Moroccan flags drawn on them. The children immediately felt a connection with their new friends in Morocco, and one boy said, “Look! That’s a Japanese flag! I want to draw a flag, too!”
One girl cut out a star-shaped hole in the center of origami paper and made a Moroccan flag. A boy drew his favorite picture of a rocket and asked what rockets were like in Morocco. Mr. Amine wrote the children’s names one-by-one in Arabic on the letters that they had written.

After the children were finished writing their letters they gathered around Mr. Amine for a group photo. The children’s letters are now going to be delivered to their new friends in Morocco.
This edition of the Tegami Project is scheduled to be introduced during the Arabic broadcast of NHK World Radio Japan for locals on Sunday, 18 September from 3:00 p.m. Information is also available in Japan from the Radio Japan Arabic Website.
