JCU assists restart of infant medical checkups and vaccinations in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture

[TOKYO, Japan, 18 May 2011]

In response to a request from Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture, the Japan Committee for UNICEF (JCU) will provide the assistance necessary for officially restarting infant medical checkups and vaccinations for children in the city. JCU has worked with the city’s government and others to provide the city, which was severely damaged by the 11 March disaster, with a complete stock of medical supplies for children, including height and weight scales, examination tables and tape measures. On 19 April, JCU became the first organization to implement infant medical checkups following the disaster in a public hall in Rikuzentakata.

In view of JCU’s experience, Rikuzentakata City has decided to restart infant medical checkups and vaccinations in earnest from next month. JCU has thus created seven different posters to encourage local mothers and fathers to participate. Starting today, the posters will be posted at shelters, preschools, kindergartens and other locations throughout the target area. Three small-size vaccination refrigerators that can be operated on three different power sources, including solar cells, were also provided to Rikuzentakata City today.

JCU prepared a total of seven different posters, including “1.5 year-old infant health checkups”, “7 month-old infant health consultations (childcare)”, “2.5 year-old child dentist checkups”, “3.5 year-old child health checkups”, “BCG vaccinations”, “DPT vaccinations (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus)” and “MR vaccinations (measles-rubella)”. Each poster was made in a different color so that mothers can easily recognize them. Moreover, in order to eliminate the trouble of having to write the posters’ information down manually, each poster includes a QR code so that people can use their mobile phone to read relevant information. The design of the posters was carried out for free of charge by Hakuhodo Inc.
